Nepal Birding
Namaste!

When we started planning our trip to Nepal and we came upon Nepal Birding Holidays little did we know that we struck gold and we're about to have one of the best wildlife experience we ever had. As a small team of three professional biologist from Romania (one ornithologist and two botanists) our main goal was to see as many species and habitats as possible in one month, with the help of a local experienced guide (although we are well-traveled, this was for all of us the first time in Asia). Already, at this point, Prem amazed us by skillfully tailoring a personalized trip for us, best suited for our needs and financial possibilities. All along as we went through the different phases of the trip (from the Annapurna region to the Terai) we felt the blessings of the impeccable logistics provided by Prem and his colleagues. Basically, we could just focus on birds & plants, instead of worrying about technicalities. And then there was Bishnu (Raj), our designated guide, who proved to be one of the best birder and guide we have ever met. He was obviously extremely well-versed regarding the natural richness of Nepal and his knowledge extended well beyond basic bird-twitching as his observation regarding other fauna and also habitats were amazingly accurate and truly helpful in our endeavour to explore the wild side of Nepal. Not only that, but he turned out to be a very likable guy: besides showing a heroic amount of patience toward our approach to exploring nature (basically we tend to walk slowly and stop a lot for plants&other creatures, as biologist do) we instantly connected through our shared taste for fun and witty humor. Things kept getting better (and our species list growing bigger every day) as we moved from the mountain to the Terai region. If you want to experience the thrills of exploring the jungle on foot, Bardiya National Park is definitely the place to visit. Right at the edge of the National Park was Samsara Safari Camp, our base for the next unbelievable 8 days. The camp is quite perfectly suited in every sense for someone who loves nature: you have all the basic facilities, a wonderful catering and service from the staff (amazing food!) and all this in a very nature-friendly way. Just while relaxing and having a masala tea in the astonishing garden you can enjoy watching a lot of bird species fluttering about, not to mention the Gorkha beers you can enjoy in the tropical evenings :). And there was our local guide from Bardiya, Santa. We suspect he has some kind of black magic skills as he was able to locate everything we expressed a desire for, let it be a rare bird species or snakes. He also turned out to be a wonderful person to have a jolly good time with. Not only we added more than 300 bird species to our lists (and many more plants and other creatures, big and small) but even more importantly we found some new good friends in the person of Bishnu, Santa and Prem, who showed us just how wonderful the people of Nepal really are. After so much fun&thrills in just a short month we sincerely recommend to anyone (and especially biologists) keen on discovering the wonders of Nepalese nature and culture to choose Nepal Birding Holidays, Samsara Safari Camp and the company of expert guides&gentlemen Bishnu and Santa, as you will definitely not regret it! You can be rest assured that beautiful moments lay ahead for you.

We travelled to Nepal in Nov 2014 to do the Terai birding tour. The tour was ably organised by Prem who responded to our many queries clearly and accurately. The Tour was led by Raj who met us at the airport despite the plane being 5hrs late due to visibility problems, he took us to the hotel, collecting us the next day to start the tour and thereafter stayed with us throughout. We really enjoyed his company and the knowledge he imparted to us. Throughout the tour we saw many birds(230+ species) and other wildlife and also saw some of the local culture, we especially enjoyed the Bardia area. If there was one aspect which pleased us it was the fact that people with local knowledge were used to assist Raj in the areas we visited.
We are happy to recommend Nepal Bird Guide.

In March 2014 I went on a birding and photography trip to Nepal, visiting Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan. The trip was expertly organized by Prem, and Bishnu was my guide for the entire trip. I had a very enjoyable time and Bishnu was a wonderful guide and very good at bird identification, and also great company. I am very pleased with the service and Nepal is a very beautiful country that I would like to see more of. I can absolutely recommend this company and if I decide to go back I would definitely contact Prem and Bishnu again.

In Nov / Dec of 2013, we arranged a 14 day birding adventure through Prem of Nepal Bird Guide. The trip was very well organized and, with Bishnu as our guide, it was an extremely enjoyable experience. We visited Bardia, Lumbini (birth place of Buddha), Chitwan, Pokhara and some areas in the Kathmandu Valley. Our trip started with a flight from Kathmandu to Bardia in the far west and then we traveled by private transport to the other locations on the way back to Kathmandu. Bishnu is a great spotter and very good at identification. It was a joy to work with him to identify some of the smaller, difficult to see species like warblers. We managed to see over 230 bird species, along with many other animals such as rhinoceros, crocodile, elephant, four species of deer, wild boar, fresh water dolphin, mongoose, along with many other small creatures and insects. Although we saw much evidence of tiger, we were not able to get a glimpse of one on this trip. Bishnu was a wonderful host with a great sense of humour, very professional, and provided us with a tremendous amount of information about Nepal. We thoroughly enjoyed his company. We would highly recommend Nepal Bird Guide, and Bishnu as a guide, for birding trips in Nepal and will certainly use them again if the opportunity arises for another birding adventure in that part of the world. We were surprised that Nepal is not more well known as a birding destination – it should be!

Prem organized a wonderful holiday birdwatching and trekking with Bishnu (Raj) as our guide in April 2013. Bishnu took us to Chitwan and organized a superb trip where everything was expertly looked after. We were delighted to see over 220 species of birds, many insects, reptiles and other animals including several White Rhinoceros and Crocodiles. After 5 days at Chitwan, Bishnu toured us around historic areas of Kathmandu and Patan. Following that we did a 7 day trek to Langtang National Park and saw many different species of birds, monkeys, gaurs, yaks, deer, and numerous other types of wildlife. We tracked two Ibisbills for an afternoon on a broad gravel floodplain that extended for miles. Bishnu somehow was able to find the camouflaged birds for us amongst miles of grey stones. He is adept at finding and identifying birds and wildlife and is an absolute pleasure to be with. He was a wonderful host - funny, knowledgeable, organized, professional and we were very pleased with the service that he and his company provided for us. We would highly recommend this company and we look forward to a return trip there with them to see some other National Parks.

Together with a friend, I visited Nepal for a 16-day wildlife photography holiday (with the main emphasis on birds). The entire trip was organised by Prem and led by Raj. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time, observing about 280 species of bird (240 photographed) and 27 species of mammal as well as many reptiles, amphibia and numerous insects. We stayed at 3 locations involving one internal flight and the organisation was very efficient. Raj proved to be an excellent guide and was always in good humour despite our constant demands. I would not hesitate to recommend this team to organise your trip to Nepal.

We all met up with Raj in Kathmandu and headed for Phulchowki, in a 4WD, arriving at the summit to be met by a noisy group of Laughing Thrushes. Raj’s identification was instant and correct, and his use of English bird names was spot on.

An internal flight to visit Bardia NP in the west was expertly organised despite the chaos of the domestic departures area.

Raj knew all the areas where birds could be located, and was able to switch itineraries and organise alternative transport when required. No mean feat.

Above all else his attention to detail and good companionship, made him not only an extremely knowledgeable and trusted leader but a good companion too. We are happy to recommed him as a bird guide in Nepal. e-mail: colinhumpage@btinternet.com
